Crochet for Your Digital Detox Day

With all of the technology that surrounds us today, our minds are constantly being stimulated. From pings and chimes to blue light and scrolling through social media, our minds become worn out. Broken down and anxious all the time. We need a digital detox, but sometimes sitting in silence can be overwhelming. A digital detox doesn’t have to mean no stimulation. Just a slower pace of stimulation. That’s where crochet comes into play. Spend your digital detox day crocheting.

As we crochet, our body learns to relax. We enter what psychologists call a flow state. Flow state is the perfect balance between too difficult and too easy. We lose track of time and forget what’s going on around us. There are some crochet projects that will allow you to achieve this flow state and others that won’t. When planning your digital detox crochet session, aim for simplicity. Here are some ideas that I think will help you relax and enjoy your day.

What Makes Us Relax While Crocheting?

There are some things about crochet that allow us to relax and enter a flow state. Our brain likes to do tasks that we know how to do. When we’re crocheting something too difficult, we aren’t relaxing; we are stressing out trying to figure out how to do what’s in front of us. When we crochet mindlessly, we relax. We are letting our body take control and allowing our brain to heal. So what kind of projects should you crochet on your digital detox day?

Blankets

If you are spending the whole day crocheting, then you want a project that will take up most of your day. Something like a blanket. But there are too many things to count when crocheting a blanket. Instead, crochet a granny stripe blanket. By working in the spaces instead of chaining up, you are eliminating some of that stress. After your first few rows, you will learn the pattern and fall into a flow state. Work 3 dc in each space and skip to the next space. Repeat until the end of the row. You will find yourself relaxing as you crochet, and your breathing will start to slow down. You’ll feel as though your mind isn’t racing as fast and you are more present, which is exactly what you want on a digital detox day!

Dishcloths

If you don’t have the time to crochet all day or you want a smaller project that you can finish in one sitting. Then try crocheting a dishcloth. Use a cotton or linen-weight yarn and crochet something simple like half double crochet or the moss stitch. You will feel great after finishing your small project. Knowing that you made something nice for your home.

Granny Squares

Crochet granny squares if you want a little bit of variety. You can crochet a bunch of different colors and patterns. You will still be relaxing because you will know how to crochet the squares. At the end of your digital detox day, you can use those squares to make a bag or blanket.

Create Your Digital Detox Space

Once you’ve picked your project for your digital detox day, you want to create an environment that allows you to relax. Put your phone away or turn it off. Get rid of any distractions. Make yourself some tea or light a candle. Once you sit down to crochet, take a few deep breaths. Remember your goal is to relax and enjoy your time crocheting. If you mess up, just rip it out and start over. No one is judging you. Enjoy your digital detox day and allow yourself to be present.
